A dental implant is an artificial tooth root used in dentistry to support restorations that resemble a tooth or group of teeth. In other terms, it’s a small titanium screw that acts as the replacement for the root of the missing natural tooth. Dental implants are used for both the lower and upper jaw. Titanium has amazing biocompatible properties, and because of that, the dental implant fuses with the bone and acts as the anchor for the replaced tooth.
Dental implants are used for replacing a single tooth or multiple teeth that need replacement. Dental implants make life easier, like chewing food and talking without pain and with more confidence.Dental implants can be used to support a number of dental prostheses, including crowns, and implants.

Surgical Advances in Modern Dentistry
The implant dentistry field has advanced alot in the recent years, from equipment and technologies, to the materials and process. Thanks to these advancements, patients experience a much easier and more comfortable procedure compared to patients from just a few years ago.In simple terms, its like comparing the advancements of old phones becoming the slim smart phones that we have in our hands today.
Another outcome of these advancements, is that sometimes it even reduces the number of times that you need to visit the dentist. Like being able to complete the required tooth extraction and the dental implant procedure at the same day or within less visits. After implants are in place, eventhough the fusion proceeds at a fast rate, you must still give it rest and time to heal for a few weeks.
Read More on these advancements:
Virtually all dental implants placed today are root-form endosseous implants. In other words, virtually all dental implants placed in the 21st century appear similar to an actual tooth root.
Prior to the advent of root-form endosseous implants, most implants were either blade endosseous implants, in that the shape of the metal piece placed within the bone resembled a flat blade, or subperiosteal implants, in which a framework was constructed to lie upon and was attached with screws to the exposed bone of the jaws

The Stages of a Dental Implant:
Dental implant placements are a multi stage effort
An implant procedure has 3 phases: a consultation phase, a surgical phase and a prosthetic (or restorative) phase.
Step 1 – Consultation Phase:
In this phase, you will get more details of the procedure and the post implant care phase. You will be asked to provide your health history, then, we’ll take a scan of your mouth so we can get a full insight on your teeth layout structure. These images will help our team in many ways, like determining if you need a bone graft, which is a separate procedure that must be done before the implant.
Step 2 – Surgical Phase:
In a dental implant process called dental Osseointegration, the root of the missing tooth gets replaced by the implant(a titanium artificial root), in the jawbone. If your jaw doesn’t have enough bone to handle the implant, a bone graft may be needed to support the bone. We have one of the best dentists in All of Ontario and Toronto, right here in Richmondhill, Dr Nasser Jafari, which has years of experience in implant dentistry.
Step 3 – Restorative Phase:
After a few weeks from the first session of the procedure, the implant will be ready for the Restorative stage. At this phase, after we place the implant abutment on the implant, a scan of the full tooth structure will be captured and sent to the lab where the custom implant denture, bridge and crown will be carefully fabricated. Then, the prosthesis will be inserted and precisely adjusted.
*Recovery From Dental Implant Surgery
Remember that dental implants last for years, so its a long term solution. So even though you can get back to normal activities in less than a week, its normal to expect a 3 to 6 month healing stage after your implant procedures have been completed. The swelling and pain after the implant, is normal and usually minor and if our doctor determines that you need pain medication, we will write you a prescription.
*Post-Implant Care
You must take care of your teeth and have your routine dental cleanings to make protect your dental implants. Your Jawbones will start receding and cause problems for the implant if you continue to have poor dental hygiene.

Technology Advancements in Modern Dentistry
One of the main things that has enabled us to complete procedures faster, has been the advancements of digital dental scanning. Using these scans, we are able to map out your tooth and jaw structure, letting us move forward with a higher speed.
